About

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a flexible, high-quality raster format widely used in photography, publishing, scanning and archival work. It supports lossless compression, multiple pages and high bit depths — but files can be very large, which is where hardware-accelerated decoding matters.

How to Open TIFF Files on Windows with VoidImageViewer

  1. Try double-click first

Windows 10/11 opens .tif and .tiff files in the Photos app. Simple single-page files display fine, but large scans load slowly and multi-page TIFFs show only the first page.

  2. Switch to VoidImageViewer

Right-click the file → Open with → Choose another app → Void Image Viewer. Hardware-accelerated decoding keeps huge TIFFs responsive, and multi-page files can be paged through one image at a time.

  3. Make it the default for .tiff

Tick “Always use this app to open .tiff files” in the Open with dialog. The .tif extension is separate, so repeat the same association for it if you receive both.

  4. Keep the original intact

TIFF is an archival format — avoid converting away from it. If you need smaller copies for the web, export PNG or JPG copies from the viewer and keep the .tiff master.

TIFF is often uncompressed or losslessly compressed to preserve full quality, so files are much larger than JPEG.

Double-clicking a .tif or .tiff file opens it in Windows Photos, which handles simple files but can be slow with large scans and shows only the first page of multi-page TIFFs. For those, right-click the file → Open with → Void Image Viewer instead.
