About

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers dramatically smaller files than JPEG and WebP at the same quality, with support for HDR, wide color gamut, transparency and animation. It is quickly becoming the format of choice for high-efficiency web images.

How to Open AVIF Files on Windows with VoidImageViewer

  1. Install a native AVIF viewer

Windows Photos only decodes AVIF after you purchase the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. VoidImageViewer is free and decodes AVIF natively — download the installer and run it.

  2. Double-click or use “Open with”

Once installed, double-click the .avif file in File Explorer. If another app grabbed the association first, right-click the file → Open with → Choose another app → Void Image Viewer.

  3. Make it the default for .avif

In the same “Open with” dialog, tick “Always use this app to open .avif files”. You can also change it later under Settings → Apps → Default apps in Windows 10/11.

  4. Or preview it right here

Drop the .avif into the preview tool on this page — modern browsers decode AVIF natively, and the file never leaves your machine.

Why Open .avif Files with VoidImageViewer

VoidImageViewer costs nothing and is released as open source under the MIT license. It contains no ads, no sign-up walls and no telemetry — the app works entirely offline. AVIF decoding is built in, so unlike the Microsoft Store route you never pay for a codec extension, and a published SHA256 checksum lets you verify the installer before running it.
