How to Open GIF Files on Windows with VoidImageViewer

  1. Double-click the file

Windows 10/11 plays .gif files in the Photos app, and your browser plays them too — but both just loop the animation with no playback control.

  2. Open it in VoidImageViewer for frame control

Right-click the .gif → Open with → Void Image Viewer. You can pause the animation, scrub through it and step frame by frame — useful for reading fine detail inside a loop.

  3. Make it the default for .gif

Tick “Always use this app to open .gif files” in the Open with dialog if you prefer frame-stepping to auto-looping.

  4. Preview online without installing

Drag the .gif into the preview tool on this page — the animation renders locally in your browser.

Why Open .gif Files with VoidImageViewer

VoidImageViewer is the free, open-source way to get real GIF playback control on Windows: pause, scrub and step frame by frame — none of which the built-in apps offer. It is MIT licensed with no ads and no telemetry, plays animated WebP and AVIF in the same window, and every download is published with a SHA256 checksum.

The online preview lets you view the file. To edit, batch-convert, or set it as your default Windows viewer, use the free desktop app.

No — the GIF format caps each frame at a 256-color palette, which is why gradients can look banded. For full-color animation, animated WebP and AVIF look better at smaller sizes, and VoidImageViewer plays those too.
